make a positive impact while improving your skills and even get paid!

I am currently in the last weeks of a software engineering bootcamp, wondering what comes next. There is still much to be done, but what do I need to do when it comes to finding a job? Of course, there are career services to help guide us on the path to our first technical role as a developer- thankfully. While trying to figure out what kind of company I want to work for, social impact comes to mind. That’s what being a dev is about anyway, right? Solving problems to make a better, more positive impact on the user and beyond… which brings me back to what this blog is all about. How to make a positive impact with your programming skills!

After some research, I have found a handful of resources, organizations and communities that you can be a part of to help others. Here’s what I have found:

If you’re interested in volunteering your technical skills for an organization that aligns with your knowledge and interests, check out Code for Social Good

Although this blog is several years old, I believe the list of 47 ‘do good’ for-profit/ non-profit companies included is still useful for anyone’s search looking to make a positive impact with their skills. The list includes technical roles with a focus on jobs in media, environment, e-commerce, education, fashion and more.

If you are interested in a full-time position or even contributing to open source project to help improve government services to communities in the U.S. you can check out options here. Keep you eye out for their 2021 summit to attend workshops, networking opportunities and more.

Another helpful resources I have found is Udacity’s Career Resource Center, specific to tech jobs for social good. Here you will find job boards, fellowships, organizations and volunteer opportunities.

I hope this information has helped you in some way. Be it, inspiring you to volunteer as a side project, get connected to a community or even find a job that better aligns with your values and goals. As always, please leave any questions, suggestions or comments below. I appreciate your feedback.
